Sunday Music Muse Day - Clifford Brown and Max Roach Quintet, Ron Carter

Again, I missed Sunday Music Muse Day post last week, I just got distracted with my Inktober drawings.  On the plus side, I listened to these this two great straight ahead jazz CDs while I was drawing.  Both share the fact I saw separate film documentaries on these jazz legends.  First up is the Clifford Brown and Max Roach Quintet At Basin Street.  Drummer Max Roach was a giant among giants in the jazz world. In watching the PBS American Masters show, Max Roach: The Drum Also Waltzes, I learn of the importance of his musical partnership with Clifford Brown their strong influence of their quintet on the jazz world. I was glad to find this CD soon after viewing the PBS show. It really added a deeper perspective to the enjoyment of listening to it.

My second selection is Ron Carter Stardust. This Blue Note lives up to the label's sterling reputation in jazz recording. The master jazz bassist leads a stellar group of sidemen through a very enjoyable session.  The film Ron Cater: Finding the Right Notes can also be found on PBS. The film and the CD are well worth seeking out.

This Tuesday is Halloween, so let's hope for pleasant weather for all our trick or treaters, of all ages.  Be safe and enjoy.

Here's my third week of drawing for Inktober 2023. I'm trying to get back on a consistent posting schedule.  This should be posted last week.  I'll post the last batch next weekend, with added commentary.

Sunday Music Muse Day - Joe Zawinul, David Darling

I missed doing my Sunday Music Muse Day post, last week (sorry, Kevin), but I'm back with two gems. First, is Joe Zawinul Stories of the Danube.  The sticker on the 1996 CD states it's the "World Premiere Recording of Joe Zawinul's First Symphony".  It's really engrossing. Of course, Joe Zawinul is best known for being a co-founder of Weather Report, the pioneering jazz fusion group, with Wayne Shorter, Jaco Pastrious, and others. Also, for playing with Miles Davis, and before that, writing the Soul Jazz hit "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy" while playing with Cannonball Adderley. Zawinul was a complete musician.  This is a really great CD.  You can hear musical quotes from music he wrote for Miles Davis and Weather Report that will bring a smile to your face. This is worth seeking out.

My second selection is David Daring Eight String Religion. I'm most familiar with cellist David Daring as an ECM recording artist. This CD is on the Hearts of Space label, which I gathered, is a more New Age music company.  This CD does exhibit some of that sound, but not in a bad way.  The label also released the music of Tim Clark - Tales of the Sun People. Clark did music for Ruby the Galactic Gumshoe, audio play series, a favorite of mine.  Eight String Religion is a pleasant collection, and fitting for a quiet afternoon, or evening.

We're getting a cool preview of fall here in upstate New York.  It's getting chilly enough to turn on the heat in the house, and throw a heavy comforter on the bed at night.  All the more reason to squirrel away some good music for the winter.  Enjoy.

Inktober 2023 - #1 - #14

Here's a quick video of the first 14 drawing I've done for Inktober 2013.  I'll do a full recap with comment when I finish the month.
