Sunday Music Muse Day - Larry Coryell, Ron Affif

Today's Sunday Music Muse Day selections feature two  jazz guitarist leading groups through some great playing of Bebop and Post-Bebop tunes that will be familiar to anyone who follows jazz.  First up, Larry Coryell Shining Hour, a session by the late guitartist recorded in 1989.  Best known as a pioneering jazz fusion player, this CD highlights his deep straight head jazz chops.

Next is Ron Afffif Vield Blues, has second release as a leader recorded in 1994.  Again, this session is full of tunes that will bring a smile to any  jazz lover's face. I admit I've only came upon Ron Affif by chance in the last few years, but I've enjoy every CD I've found. I'll keep my eye out for more.

So, what better way to spend a winter afternoon or evening than to enjoy some swinging jazz guitar music.  Enjoy.

Windham Hill Records, Ron Affif Trio,

On this cloudy, and rainy, Sunday Music Muse Day, I'm feeling like I have a hangover, but it's just my being dragged out from a 7 hour drive after watching my son's away football game.  So, I'm spending the day with some softer tunes.  First up is the Windham Hill Record Guitar Sampler of acoustic guitarists.  I can't say I know any of the players.  I have past Windham  Hill produced music by guitarists Michael Hedges, William Ackerman, and Tuck Address (of the Tuck and Patti duo).  All considered part the New Age Music, sort of a bridge of instrumental music between acoustic Rock and Folk.  This sampler is a pleasant collection, but none of the players really stand out to me.  Still fitting for a laid back day.

My second selection is a more straight ahead jazz guitar music offering by Ron Affif Trio 52nd Street. This is the second CD I've found of this guitarist and he presents a solid mix of well known jazz compositions and one original, excellently played.  This was recored in 1995, but if he came to town I'd take a chance on listening live.

Still feeling mellow, so it maybe a early bedtime tonight.  Echoes of good tune will be a prefect lullaby.

Sunday Music Muse Day - Emily Remler, Ron Afif

This Sunday Music Muse Day find me on the last day of vacation time.  I started the day volunteering, with Lisa,  at the Jazz 90.1 booth at the East Ave Art Festival.  That was fun with plenty of people watching.  Now I'm relaxing with some afternoon jazz.  First up is Emily Remler East to Wes, a excellent straight ahead jazz set by the late guitarist recorded in 1988, joined by a stellar cast of sidemen. Definitely an artist who left us way too so.

Next is a  new guitarist to me, at least, Ron Affif Solotude.  As the title hints at, it"s a solo guitar set featuring some jazz standards and several originals written by Affif.  It's an enjoyable session, on Pablo Record label, home of the legendary Joe Pass, the master of solo jazz guitar.  Affif does the tradition proud. I'm always willing to try new guitarist.  This one's a keeper.

Hopefully, some time spent with good music will help ease the pain of the news of the latest mass shooting in the U.S.  I heart aches with the families and friends of the victim.  Seems we're powerless to end the madness.
