Sunday Music Muse Day - Duke Ellington, Chick Corea and Gary Burton, Pat Metheny

Today's Sunday Music Muse Day selections are by way of the South Wedge Record Fair at the German House.  It was mainly for vinyl record collector, but there were some CDs to be had.  First off, it was nice to see Derek Lucas, music director and DJ from Jazz90.1 radio, spinning discs at two turntables near the entrance.  Derek added a great soundtrack to the event.  I found some CDs of a few favorites to add to my collection.  First is Duke Ellington The Pianist.  I thought I may have had this, but apparently I didn't, perhaps confusing it with Duke's Piano in the Foreground session, The Pianist has him playing in a small group, mainly just bass and drums.  My father, Sam Woodyard, plays drums on seven of the ten cuts, and he even has tune named for him, "Sam Woodyard's Blues".  That may it a must buy, just for that.  I actually like Duke small group recordings a lot.  You get to hear him stretch out more.   This will be a nice compliment to the  Piano in the Foreground CD.

Next is Chick Corea and Gary Burton Native Sense - The New Duets.  Corea and Burton are one of my favorite musical duos.  Since their first Crystal Silence album released on ECM in the 1973, I've would never pass up a chance to hear them.

Last selection is another favorite artist, Pat Metheny Group Speaking of Now, one of those CD of his I missed during a period when I was not buying any music much, not sure why. But, it's always good to catch up.

As the end of the election draws near, it's good to had some good music to distract us from the noise on the outside world.  Here's hoping for better days.

Sunday Music Muse Day, Joey DeFrancesco, Dextor Gordon, and Pat Metheny

This week's Sunday Music Muse Day offers a nice blend of classic Jazz sounds from well known artists.  First up, Hammond B-3 organist, Joey Defrancesco Ballads and Blues, featuring guitar legend Pat Martino on two cuts.  The Hammond B-3 is such a distinctive sound in jazz, and Joey DeFrancesco is a major force in keeping that sound alive and well in today's jazz arena.

Last, but no least, another Pat Metheny CD, Pat Metheny Group We Live Here.  There is always room for another Metheny offering in my collection.  He still is one of my all time favorites.  Part of that is I discovered him at the very start of his career and it's like we grew up together.  I think a lot of us may feel that way about artists we bonded with, when we were young.  You find yourself so happy they're still making good music that you enjoy.

It is a chilly cloudy day, just the thing to sit back and listen to some good tunes.  Enjoy.

Sunday Music Muse Day - Bill Frisell, Pat Metheny, Freddie Hubbard and Patricia Barber.

I missed posting last week, due to family stuff, so I'm back with this week's Sunday Music Muse Day with four solid selections.  First up, a favorite guitarist of mine, Bill Frisell Big Sur, with another eclectic and adventurous outing.  Big Sur finds Bill playing with a drummer and a viola, cello, and violin  string trio.  The title comes from the music being written at Glen Deven Ranch in Big Sur, a legendary region in California Big who's relative isolation and natural beauty began to attract writers and artists, and performed at the 2012 Monterey Jazz Festival.

Next up is another, favorite, Pat Metheny The Way Up, which find Pat teamed with long time musical band mates Lyle Mays, on piano and keyboards, and Steve Rodby, on acoustic and electric bass.  The CD consist of one long 68 minute composition.  A very engrossing music.

Here's another Rudy Van Gelder Edition CD which he transferred and remastered a classic Blue Note album with 24-bit technology, Freddie Hubbard Hud-Tones. Again, a chance to fill my hole in my collection is a classic Blue Note reissue.  An interesting personal note, in a sort of a "six degrees of separation", when I was in Paris when my father was sick, I stayed at the home of the sister of the bassist Reggie Workman.  Small world.

Last but not least in a female pianist and singer Patricia Barber, the Cole Porter Mix CD.  I like to think of Patricia as my personal "Diana Krall" in that I like her rendering of standards and her own originals.
