Happy Birthday, Sam Woodyard (Jan. 7, 1925 - Sept. 20, 1988)

Here is my annual birthday tribute to my father, Sam Woodyard, drummer for the legendary Duke Ellington band. A year before he died I visited Sam in Paris, he was very in very poor heath at the time. His many wonderful friends there shared many warm memories with me. They also give me these albums Sam played on as a sideman while in Paris. I will treasure these always. My special thanks to Gwen Persiany-Workman and Andre' Persiany (his album is shown below) who welcomed me into their home and treated me like family. My thank to everyone.

Dark Horse Present - A Dragonfly Flipz book Tribute

Here's a Dragonfly Flipz Book tribute to the Dark Horse Comic's re-launch of the "Dark Horse Comics Presents", their anthology comic book. The original "DHP" series was a true favorite of mine in it's heyday at the height of the independent black and comic craze. DHP introduce many creator owned properties like Steve Rude's Nexus, Mike Mignola's Hellboy, Paul Chadwick'S Concrete, Fran Miller's Sin City and "300". I glad they're bring it back.

To celebrate, I've put together this video of Dragonfly Flipz Books based on properties published by Dark Horse. Some, like the Concrete Comix Flipz™ book have been posted before, But the Sin City Cinema Flipz™ and Lone Wolf and Cub 2100 Comix Flipz™ are being shown for the first time. Of course, there is a back story to all these flip books, but let's just said they're still just concept demos, not for sale, and leave it at that.

I also like to thank Tom Pethic, a Jazz DJ on monday nights at JAZZ 90.1, in Rochester, NY. Tom was playing the Duke Meets Coleman Hawkins CD, I called him in the studio just to thank him. He then showcased Sam's playing for the rest of his show. Thanks again, Tom. I encourage Jazz fans world wide to visit JAZZ 90.1 and Tom Pethic's website.

Exosquad DVD and Video Dumpster Diving

While shopping on Amazon for something else, I decide to pick up DVDs of some shows I worked on. So, I picked the ExoSquad Season 1, and the Adventures of the Galaxy Rangers, The Collection Volume 2. I figure these show may not show up in Blu-Ray. I consider myself lucky they showed it in DVD, at all. By contrast, I have little hope that the Nascar Racers series will every been released by Disney. Also, it seems the remainder of the Disney Gargoyles episodes may never be released.

I hope the second season of ExoSquad gets released sometime. I directed half the shows of the second season and got to design some characters, like this Neo-Lord, which was turned into a action figure toy. I was only the oversea animation supervisor on the first season, but that lead to my move to LA. The Galaxy Ranger Vol.2 completes the set, I had Vol. 1 already. It nice to see some of my art on the cover and in the booklet.

Funny thing, I was shopping in a local Big Lots, a discount store, and there was the Exosquad DVD for $3. WTF!!? No harm done, I only pay $10 on Amazon. Actually, I've been picking up more DVDs, animation and live action, by video "dumpster diving" into discount bins. If you not hang up on the Blu-Ray craze, it is a good time to pick up some DVDs of stuff you where interested in, but not enough to pay full price for. Some stuff I view once and put up on Ebay. That's getting tougher to do with the price dropping so much.

Spartacus Movie Book & Woody Strode

I just posted a video of the Illustrated Movie book of the Spartacus the classic film form 1960. It has some great production drawings, movie stills, lobby art cards and other good. It is probably out of print, I picked this up at a old book store in Burbank, CA. The new Starz Spartacus: Blood and Sand reminded me of how much I loved the original. My favorite scene is the first fight between Spartacus (Kick Douglas) and Draba (Woody Strode).

This video to dedicated to Jean Simmons (Varinia), who recently passed ago, and Woody Strode.

Woody Strode screen time was brief, but it had a great impact on me as 10 year Black kid watching the film in the theater. The Draba character was the basic for my Conan-inspired "Blackwolf " (follow the link to the Blackwolf section of my website)website. I meet Woody Strode one time, purely by chance, he was appearing at a Movie Fan convention at the Beverly Garland Hotel in North Hollywood the weekend I was there just before going to Korea for Universal Exosquad as oversea superviser. I dropped in on the convention, just to kill time and there was Woody Strode signing autographs and sharing stories about his acting career. I bought the movie still in the video and had Woody sign it. Then I went back to my room and return with a drawing of my Blackwolf character. I give Woody the drawing which I signed and thanked him for his inspiration. I not a big stargazer, but I'm glad a got chance to thank him in person.

Back in the 1950's and '60's there were very few black action heroes in films. The quiet Woody Strode played in some of my favorite action movies, Spartacus, The Professionals, with Lee Marvin and Burt Lancaster, and Pork Chop Hill, with Gregory Peck. He was alway a support character. One of his best role was in Sergio Leone's Once upon a Time in the West, although he get killed off in the first two minutes of the film, but it was a great two minutes. I read Woody Strode's autobiography last year and marvel at his achievements before entering the acting. For example, he was one of the first African-American to play professional football, back in the 1930's, long before Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in Major League Baseball. I plan to present more of Woody Strode's work in the future.

The cool graphic style of the opening sequence was a real treat and helped make this one of my favorite animated films. I thought the 2D animation would make a good flip book. I think of it as a salute to the animation team who are credited on page 2 of the flip book. I also included an art gallery of the ending credits. I thought of doing a separate Dragonfly Flipz™ book of the credits but , maybe someday. Since this is still a "Concept Demo" it is still not for sale ( I keep hoping get these in front of the right eyeballs). But, I will be sending one to my friend, Cyrus Voris, who was the co-writer of the story. As a animation geek, I think he'll like it, and I hope you do, too.

Kung Fu Panda Dragonfly Flipz Preview

It been a while since my last new Dragonfly Flipz™ Book. I've been busy securing gainful employment and I'm happy to say with I've had some success. So, I'm hoping to get back to produce more Dragonfly Flipz™ book "Concept Demo" samples (not for sale, as always).

Here's a preview of the next one, the Kung Fu Panda Cinema Flipz™. I started this after the release of the film last year. I wanted to do it as a tribute to my friend Cyrus Voris, who was one of the co-writer of the story, and the artists who worked the film. But, after a couple of rejections of Dragonfly Flipz proposals for other properties, not Kung Fu Panda, I pulled back from doing Concept Demo books. Now, I'm ready to give it another try. I've got a couple of Dragonfly Flipz books started, several other flipz book ideas worth doing.

Click on the picture for an enlarged view of the first ten "comic book layout" pages and the first flip book page, and two art gallery pages. I plan to finish printing the book this week and have a video posted on youtube by next week end.

Concrete Motion Comic and Goofy Gold Record Spot

The lazy, hazy, days of summer are over, so it time to post more stuff on youtube and my blog. First up, some old fun videos I find while moving some boxes around the basement.
Concrete Motion Comic

The Concrete Comic book / Video Adaptation (as I called it back then) is something I put together on my old Amiga computer. I figured I'd better dump it to digital file before the tape goes bad.
I pitched this to Paul Chadwick (who has copy of it on VHS) and Dark Horse long before they got into movies. I also used it for one of my Dragonfly Flipz books. I'd like to update and finish it, someday.

Goofy Gold is a old cheesy, novelty record spot I worked on back in the 1970's. Remember 8-Tracks cassettes!! It is funky, but still fun. Basically, I was just created animated scenes, site gags and lame jokes, to match the song clips. These were totally low, low, budget. But, they made tons of money for the record producer, not me. Leave a comment if you remember seeing this, or remember any of the songs.

In both them you see why I never sell myself as a true "animator", but they were fun making. I got other record spots to put up that are just as cheesy. they're good for laugh.

My Demo Reel

Here is my animation Producer / Director Demo reel. Some what dated, but there is still some nice stuff in it. Gargoyles, and Thundercats have been released on DVD, but Ozzy and Drix, and Men in Black, have yet to be released. I'm especially fond of the Nascar Racers series. I still think it looks pretty good for it's time, and better than the new Speed Racer series. There was a lot of great CGI racing action in the show. I'll have pull some more clips to show. The series is now owned by Disney and I doubt if it will be released on DVD. (They have a property call "Cars", you know)

It nice to revisit these shows, but I look forward to moving on to my own projects.

New Youtube Posts

Here a batch of new videos I posted this past week or so. They run the gambit from Dragonfly Flipz books to a special animator debut and showcase.

First up is the Alien Parade,- Part 1 - Web Flipz™ based on the animated CGI short of Den Beauvais, award winning Comic (Aliens), Fantasy and Video Game artist (Vanguard, Saga of Heroes). Den and I recently renewed our licensing agreement, so, I'll continue selling this, and making more Alien Parade flip books. This flip book is on my ebay store, Dragonfly Emporium.

Next up is my Dragonfly Web Flipz™ based on my movie of the American Presidents slide show on the White House web site (www.whitehouse.gov). This is a test printing, as such, the second side has some images out of order. I thinking of doing a four flip book set (if I can get permission to use the images from the slide show), with added featured when you group the book's back covers together. I'll post them soon.

The Magus, Robot Fighter flip book was something I found in my old art files. I made it from an promo video I did on my Amiga Computer with Deluxe Paint. If enough Valiant Comic fans show an interest in it and post a comment, maybe I'll do a free download version, since I don't know who owns the rights to Magus at this point.

Here's my Sound Sketch #4 - Just a Thought, A short piece I wrote on April 26, 1980 (I had the date written down on chord sheet) I imagined it as being the calm music piece to follow a hard rocking tune to end a live gig at a small club. Someday , I may get up the nerve to play at a open mike night at one of our local clubs or coffee house. Until then, I just share it here. Enjoy.

Last, but not least, is this debut animation by my 11 year son. In his words: "This is a film about a Giant Lobster that eats pig-stealing aliens, and there is a surprise at the end!!!" It was done one at the 2009 Brighton schools Festival of Ideas (stop-motion animation workshop). Keep in mind the class was only an hour long. Great job!

I pick up several DVDs this week. The Wonder Woman animated original movie, Immortal (Limted Edtion), the live action Sci-Fi movie base on the French graphic novel (amazing visuals), and the Watchmen - The Complete Motion Comic, containing all 12 episodes (an added bonus is a movie coupon for $7.50 off the admission price for the theatrial release. That makes it almost free in my area where the theater ticket is $8.00)

(Note - I haven't seen the movie yet and I've only gotten through the first episode of the motion comic)

I'll just write about the Watchmen DVD first. This is the collection of the shorts that were offered online. I only saw one episode, and not all the way through. So, I'm glad they released the this. "Motion Comic" is the "new" format being hyped my several companies. Us, old-timers, recognize them as updated versions of the first funky "Marvel Comic TV animation" from the 1960's. That said, this animatic style works really well for telling the Watchmen story. It's success, in my opinion, has to with the great Dave Gibbons artwork. Also the audio presentation is more like a audio book, one narrator, doing all the voices. I'm enjoying this limited animation version very much. Today's graphic/video editing technology has may the type of animation very appropriate for the right project. It will be interesting to see this "Motion Comic" concept develop.

Another great example of the style, actually pre-dates the Watchmen stuff. (I mentioned this before) It is the Metal Gear Solid - Digital Graphic Novel released for the PSP Playstation Portable in 2006. It adapts IDW Publishing MGS comics with artwork my Ashley Wood but it was only release for UMD, PSP format only. Sony would be wise to dump it to DVD and Blu-Ray. You could probably download it from the Playstation Network, but a hard copy wouldn't hurt.

By the way, this is a format I proposed to Dark Horse and Valiant Comic back in 1990's and I used for my own Warrior in the Mist Comic/Video/flip book project. I called it Comic Book/ Video Adaptations. Okay, that tagline is a little long winded. Magus Robot Hunter Promo, Dr. Solar Valiant Promo, Paul Chadwick's Concrete Comix Flipz, and are all samples of my Comic / Video Adaptation concept. Look like early "Motion Comics" to me.

Looking back, I'm starting to think I'm a neither a f**kin' genius, ahead of his time, or the worse salesman ever. I can only hope my Dragonfly Flipz book format take off, under my stewardship and not ten year down by somebody else, with "new" name. Such is creative life.

The Wonder Woman DVD leaves me with mixed feelings. It's a solid presentation on par with the Superman and Justice League: New Frontier DVDs. I won't go into the full back story here. You can go to DC / Warners Bros. official web site for that. The PG-13 rating not withstanding, it still comes off rather tame for the subject matter. The staging of the battle scenes are good, but missing convincing punch even for animation. There plenty of sword play, but the lack of blood letting is oddly apparent. Looks like they self-censored themselves too, much. The style's TV animation roots are plainly visible, and that may be the root of the problem, for me. I'm a little tire of seeing this super hero styling. In stark contrast, check out HIghlander: The search for Vengeance, directed by Yoshiaki Kawajiri produce by Manga Video (part of Starz Media), Both stories have simuliar elements, flashbacks, big battle scenes, but the action scenes in the Highlander DVD are amazing. So, if I have to rate it, I'd give the Wonder Woman DVD a B-.

The Immortal DVD is another beast, altogether. It is a amazing blend of CGI animtion and live action and total blend. Live actor and CGI characters populate this visually rich adaptation of the graphic novels by director Enki Bilal, "The Carnival of the Immortals and the "The Woman Trap" Les Humanoides Asscies. Here's the story line (From the back cover text) "New York City, year 2095. A floting pyramid has emerged u in the skies above Manhattan, inhabited by ancient Egyptian Gods. The have cast judgement down on upon Horus (a falcon headed god), one of their own. With only seven days to preserve his immortality, he must find a human to inhabit, and search for a mate." That just scratches the surface of this stunning film. I remember seeing his work in the U.S. editions of the Heavy Metal Magazine and hardcover graphic novels. Thisis great stuff, but definitely for a mature audience, in a good way. In checking the imdb.com, Enki Bilal has several other films to his credit. I'll be sure check those out some time.

Black History Month - Heroes of the Negro Leagues

As the National Black History Month draw to end, I like to sneak this last thought in. I was trolling the racks of Barnes and Noble last week and the cover of this book jumped up at me. Not, as you would think, because I'm a baseball fan, (really I'm not) No, it was because the artwork was done by a friend of mine, Mark Chiarello. The book, Heroes of the Negro Leagues is based on a series of trading cards Mark did back in the 1990's for the Eclipse Comics publisher. The series was called Stars of the Negro Leagues, with 36 painted cards with text by Jack Morelli. Mark had given me set, and I still have it close at hand in my studio after all these years. Mark is currently a award winning editor/art director at DC Comics with a list of accomplishment too lengthy to go into here.

This is great little book, especially for Black History Month, not to mention the start of the Major League Baseball's spring training. Mark's watercolors is wonderful and fits the subject perfectly. Jack Morelli's text is very illuminating. As he wrote the introduction for card set, "These cards pay tribute to these men. They are baseball's hidden heroes". I hope this book reaches a wider audience. I'm recommending to the librarians I work with. I'm putting it on my gift-giving list for sure. A special bonus, the DVD documentary "Only the ball was White", produce by WTTW/Chicago, a PBS station, is included with the book.

Killzone 2 War. Perfected. Game Flipz Book

To celebrate the release of Killzone 2, I've posted a FREE DOWNLOAD of my Dragonfly Game Flipz book based on the excellent Killzone: War. Perfected. TV commercial. Here is a chance for Killzone fans (and all gamers) who said they wanted one to have a Dragonfly Game Flipz, to get one. So, pass the word to friends and Killzone fan sites.
Just go to my website, www.dragonflyent.net, and click on the cover image in the upper left hand corner to download the PDF file. Read the instruction on the 11th and 12th page. Basically print it out and assemble it. As a bonus, I've included a choice of ISA, or Helghast cover art.

The video shows a test printing and it has some mistakes the will be fixed, but I couldn't resist posting this now, with the Killzone 2 game being released Friday, Feb.27. I just picked up the Brady Games Killzone 2 game guide book from my local GameStop. My Dragonfly Game Flipz books would have been a nice bonus for pre-order customers, but I quess it wasn't meant to be. This Killzone Game Flipz joins the Halo Flame Thrower Game Flipz book as a free download. I may do more from time to time, my main focus will turn tomy own projects. Look for them soon.

Lincoln 200th Anniversary Birthday Tribute

Here is a video tribute to Abe Lincoln on the 200th anniversary of his birth.

This video came together very quickly and mostly by happy accidents. The wonderful illustrated book was just pull from storage because of our current move. It was picked up after being disgarded by my kid school in California. No bad intentions, just part of the annual weeding of old book to make room for new ones. For me, one look at the interior paintings by James Daugherty and I just had to save it. Unfortunately, the dust cover was long gone. With the elect of President Obama, and with all the comparisons to, and his fondness for Lincoln. I thought the illustrations would make a good video. The narration track by Jeff Daniels is from a youtube video ( I'll post this as to response to to). My first plan was to just video my turning of the book pages to the Daniels narration track. But, in searching on the web to see if a good shot of the missing cover existed, I found the beautiful full-frame images of the painting on The Lincoln Highway National Museum & Archives web site. So, I decide to use them for main body of the video. The intro and ending music is by Bill Frisell, a very fine guitarist. The sound tracks are from two songs "Jimmy Carter (Part 1) and (Part 2), named for the former president, how timely. Since I work part-time in a public library, this book themed video is a real treat. I hope you enjoy it, and share it with friends, family, and teachers.

Dragonfly Flipz Indie Aritst Preview Showcase

Here's several Dragonfly Flipz Preview Showcase of Flip book base on independent artist, creator-owned projects.

These flip books were done very early in the development of my Dragonfly Flipz book concept. I plan, with artists' permission, to make these available as DIY (Do It Yourself) flip book downloads for a small fee. In addition, I plan to revise and expand these into Dragonfly Flipz Mini-books. I just designed and produced the flip books. All the artwork was done creators.
Cyberella, by Don Cameron, is base on a animatic Don did. Cyberella was co-created by comic legend Howard Chaykin. It was a comic series for DC Comics Helix imprint (discontinued). I'm try to get Don to do more with Cyberella. Don latest work as CGI animation backgound art design on the DEAD SPACE Animated DVD.
Yojimbo 4, by Dell Barras, talent artist with ton of experience in the animation field, earning a Emmy nomination for Animation Direction. Yojimbo 4 flip book is a a few scene for flash short Dell sent to me.
Cat Burglar, by artist / animator Steward Lee is base on a animated short. It's actually part 1 of 2. But, the 2nd part is only in pencil test form. Steward is also a great comic book artist.
Velocity, by Creative Logik Universe, Al Lopez and John Bavaresco, CGI EFX guys. Their credits include CGI work with Steven Spielberg's IMAX movies, Titanic and Aliens of the Deep. The y also work on a little know, but great showing show, Nascar Racer (the CGI racing scene are head above the new Speed racer TV series, in my humble opinion. But, I was the producer / director on Nascar Racers, so I may be bias) Velocity is still looking for a creative home. Check their link on my Dragonflyent.net site.

Public Libraries at Risk?!!

US Libraries on Borrowed Time?

I confess I didn't use the library as much as I should have, in the recent past. My wife made regular use of it for herself, and for the kid's books. But I alway held a fondness for the library. I used the library as a poor kid as place to do my homework, and explore the world through books. When I first started my freelance art career, the New York Public Library was where I got books and pictures references for assignments, way before the web came into being.

I now work part-time at the local branch and it feels like "I've come home", again. It's a perfect fit for all my interests, art, music, technology, etc. In the current depressing climate, the library is a great asset to the community. Free loan of books, movies, DVDs, free computer access, and much more. This is a cornerstone of Amercian life started by one of our founding fathers, Ben Franklin. To think this grand asset would be left to fade away due to lack of funds in a horrible thought.

Like a lot of public services deemed a low priority by small minded politicians, library budgets are being slashed incredibly, and private contributions are falling. They are operating on shoe-string budgets, which force cutbacks in much needed patron services and staffing needs. Librarians, like teachers are not highly paid, but they should be. A lot of the library service staff are part-time, ranging from college students to old farts, like me. Many positions, and tasks, are filled, and done, by volunteers of all ages, especially senior citizens. This is truly a community staffed and run local operation.

So, support your local library. With money, or your time. Next time you're looking for that hot best seller, skip Barnes and Noble, and Borders, and head to the library. Think of it as a form of going "Green", in a way. You get to read the book, it you like it, you can still buy it later. Return it to the library and someone else gets to use it (can this be considered recycling?) Less trees have to be cut down for less books produced wastefully. Plus, libraries have great book sales. My library, Brighton Memorial Library of Rochester, New York, has a bookstore run by the Friends of BML, a non-profit patron group who help fund various library activities. New hardback books can be purchased for $3 to $4, tops. (I picked up a $30 oversized hardback copy of Frank Miller's "300" graphic novel for $3.00) A lot of the books are patron donations and in excellent condition. Need a DVD for the weekend, try the library. It's faster that Netflix (unless you use the download service, but still cheaper). I urge everyone to consider volunteering your time, and creative talent, to your public library. Donate your unwanted books, DVDs (hold on the VHS there being fazed out, and they take up a lot of space), music CDs, and spoken word CDs to the library. Some will be added to library circulating collection, or offered for sale with the proceeds going to the library. These are just a few thoughts on subject. You won't regret it.

P.S.
For the record, I like the Borders, and Barnes and Noble, book stores, but at the end of the day you're a "customer" to them. At the public library you're a "patron".

New Beginning - Tribute to President Obama

Here a my video inspired by the Inauguration for President Barack Obama. When I realized my next youtube video would be my 50th video post, a personal milestone, in a way, I wanted to do something special. The Inauguration proved to be the perfect subject.
It a simple video, just a re-edit of the Presidents Slideshow on the White House web site set to the music played at the event. But I think you'll agree, this is new day, a "New Beginning", not just for Barack Obama, but for all of us. As I watched CNN that morning, even before the swearing in, it was the comments of the people in the gathering crowd that give me the most warmth and inspiration. Plain Americans from all walks of life who wanted to be there, to share in this historic moment.

Music Muse Day - More Or Les

In keeping with my Music Muse Sunday efforts, here's a original tune, "More or Les", my third Sound Sketch just posted on youtube.

The "Les" in the title refers to a old friend of Les Bernstein, not Les Paul the great guitar player, and father (inventor) of the solid body electric guitar, although it could be dedicated to him, also. This jazzy tune was inspired my a jam session I have with Les (B.) when we work together at animation company back in late '70s. Les was a much better guitar player than I was, at the time. But it was fun trying to keep up with him. Les is now a independent film producer/director. I hope he still plays. I'm working on some lyrics for this tune and longer version with a break for solos. Check back for it.

I'm getting braver about posting my music and showcasing my guitar play, as limited as it is. Next up,...a vocal. There one thing youth and old age share is a sense of fearlessness. Youth because they're too dumb to know better, and old people because they just do care. Besides, it been said there's no fool, like an old fool. Enjoy.

Here's my annual tribute to my dad. The late, great Sam Woodyard. Here's clip I found on youtube with Sam playing in a trio setting with Duke Ellington, in a sculpture garden Of Miro pieces. He was well known for his brush work on drums. I don't think you hear that style of drumming much today. Enjoy.

Here's my Dragonfly Flipz Book Killzone 2 Game Flipz books Retrospective. (All unreleased and Concept Demos, not for sale) Really, it's just a chance to make HD versions for better viewing.) I shoot this as a way to give a better sense of how you would read a Dragonfly Flipz book. You can think of as a Dragonfly Flipz introduction and "how to read"tutorial. I get many people viewing who don't quite get the Dragonfly Flipz comic book page / multi-panel flip book concept. I kept the repeating soundtrack, which is from a later Killzone 2 trailer, simple for that reason. I want this to be closer to the true book experience. I think of my Dragonfly Flipz Mini-Books as a new graphic novel, comic book, and story book format. I plan to develop them for movie tie-in books (like for Transformer, Batman, etc), and education titles (like a Space Shuttle launch, or Mars Landing). I considering trying doing a Dragonfly of a feature length movie of like the original King Kong or maybe the recent Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow. Time will tell. For now, enjoy.

I hope everyone had a wonderful, peaceful, holiday season.
But, I'm glad the annual, massive, rush to buy and get new stuff, that started in mid-November, has finally ended. Don't get me wrong. I love the whole Christmas and Happy Holiday season. I love giving presents, more than receiving them...really. But, as I'm still in the middle of settling in after moving to a new house. Emptying our storage space, I realized I have lot of "STUFF"! Like a lot of artist / animation nerds my age (late 50's) I have loads of comics, books, paperback books, vinyl records (yes, 12" records), toys, posters, and oddball stuff that hard to label. This is not to mention the stack old personal art work stored in old portfolios, from teen years to the present, and old artwork, VHS tapes, and saved materials from the TV shows, and other projects, I worked on. So, at this stage in my life I realize I'm not a collector, of anything (I never was really), I'm a ACCUMULATOR of STUFF! Some personal, have professional, mostly fun, and more just plain odd. I've started weeding out stuff when I moved recently. But, a lot of old stuff actually traveled from east coast, to west coast, and back again, just because I couldn't throw it away. Enough is enough!

The line "...my clock is in the red", alway stuck with me. It seems to say how can you move forward when your dragging that old stuff behind you. So, I'm going to start getting rid of stuff. Some it will end up on Ebay, as part of the world greatest garage sale (hopely to pay for new updated stuff, like a new computer, HD TV and PS3, if I'm lucky). Other items will be in the family's spring garage sale. And, lastly some will end up in the garbage. But go it will. I don't intent to end up like those people who die and are found among floor to ceiling piles of old newspapers and magazines. I plan to at least clear spot so I can fall to the floor. (Also, my sweet wife assures me she'll have no second thoughts about dumping all of my stuff in the trash. She's not a pack-rat like me, by any means)

One of my last New Year's Resolutions was to renew my interest in music. as I
November Night is one of our favorite original tunes, which I wrote. This was actually the first time all three of us played it together. Richard, the flute player, and I had work on it before. I always loved the way we did a "stop time" pause near the end of the tune. It was performed before an audience of one, Joyce Benitez, my girlfriend at the time, at her apartment. Fun was had by all, so before the cassette tape totally rots away, I thought I'd share with with the world. (At the risk of making a complete fool of myself...well, too late now) Enjoy.

The Iron Man - War Machine Comix Flipz book (concept demo) was done several years ago, long before the movie was started. It's made from a test clip from NIC Entertainment, an Korean animation studio did as a demo for Marvel. I wish I have the full clip to show, but I return the demo tape to the friend who lend it to me. The NIC did the art for the War Machine graphic novel released under Marvel Comics' MAX Comics imprint. Maybe I get to make some more, if Marvel is interested.

The Halo 2 Dragonfly Game Flipz Mirco-Book is the first Halo Flipz book I did originally as 5" x 7" book. This time, I shrank it to trading card size, just to see how small this flip book format would work. Actually it worked pretty good. Still, without a licensing deal I can't produce them.

Mariam Makaba

I was really sad to read the news of Miriam Makaba passing. She was a truly remarkable person. If you don't know about her, do yourself a favor and read this obit from the NY Times, then search out her music.

I remember my oldest sister playing Miriam's album featuring "The Click Song" back as a teen in the '60's. It's a warm memory for me. But, also it was probably my first expose to world music. I could never figure out how she did that vocal. Check out the youtube clip.

New Hope for the Future

I'm not big on political posts. That said, I barely held back the tears at the news of the Obama win. On Election Day, my wife and I took our boys ("mixed-race" kids) into the voting booth with us. I wanted them to share in this milestone, with the hope that maybe, in their lifetime, the whole "hyphen-American" labels will disappear.

We, all Americans, did "win". Like-minded people kept the Dream of Martin Luther King alive and made it a real, every day, element of their lives. We kept the "Faith" and lived to see the seeds of our efforts, and the efforts of all those who came before us, bear fruit in our grown (and growing ) children.

This isn't a victory for a single Black man, or racial group. That is much too narrow a view of what this election victory stands for. I think Barack Obama won on "the content of his character", which, of course, is a turn on the famous line from the Martin Luther King's March on Washington speech. Born in 1950, I have witnessed and lived through many historic moments of the last (almost) six decades, with a mixture of proud, happiness, pain, and shame. Examine any piece of American, (or World History), and you'll probably feel the same range of emotions.

The two basic personal beliefs I hold: 1. There is only one Race on this earth , the Human Race, a Family of Man, dysfunctional perhaps, but still just one tribe. 2. I'm an proud American. The greatness of the United States of America is in the concept that's embodied in the words "We the People..." America is place where all earth's children came together and shared, learned from each other, and they choose to become "real Americans". Some came by choice, some by desperation, some by chains. Our dark times, were when we choose to exclude fellow human beings for petty, evil, reasons. Our brightest moments are times like this election when inclusion is the order of the day. Barack Obama was a magnet that drew new young voters into the system and older voters, who may have lost faith, back into the system. For that act alone, he is a winner.

The question of will he succeed as President is misleading. The real question is will we succeed in helping him perform to the best of his ability? Do we support his platform of change with positive actions, not just words? Challenge his ideas, we may oppose, in a respectful, thoughtful, constructive manner or tear him down at the first misstep? It's our choice.

I look forward to better day and I will do my best to help achieve them. There is hope for the future, again. I'm so grateful I lived to see this day.

Classic Vinyl Album Cover Art

Over at Animation Nation, the subject of album cover art came up. Some of us old-timers were fondly remembering a couple of our favorites and the ELP BRAIN SALAD SURGERY cover came up. The cover artist was H. R. Giger, of "Alien" fame. The is a great example of the artful, over the top, packaging produced during the album's heyday, 1973. So, for those too young to know what we talking about here it is.

Star Wars Clone Wars - Movie

Well, for what it's worth, I saw Clone Wars, last week, with my two boys, and I was very disappointed by it. I've directed my share of TV action-adventure episodes (Thundercats, Gargoyles, ExoSquad and Nascar Racers, on which I was the top dog, and had the same experience of making my first three episodes in a movie to start off the series), and you sort of "get what you get". But within the first 5 minutes of Clone Wars my heart sank. The voice over was really bad, feeling like it was just tacked on, and things just got worse from there. It's the same sinking feeling I got when I saw the original theatrical releases of "Dune" and "Blade Runner" as examples of movies not living up the source material. I just felt the directing on Clone Wars was totally lacking in pacing and impact. My boys felt it was okay, but they ripped it apart on the home.

I think it's tough to do stories of iconic characters the who's destinies (and deaths), is so well known. How do you keep story dramatically interesting when you know these guys can't really be seriously hurt? The creative team has their work cut out for them.

Hopefully, the Lucas studio will improve the show during the series. I still like the art style and hope they have success with Clone Wars. Time will tell.

Star Wars Clone Wars Toon Flipz Book

This is my Dragonfly Toon Flipz mini-book of the first Star Wars Clone Wars "Series Preview Trailer" released last year. I made this concept demo book and sent it, with a proposal, to show's executive producer at Lucas Arts. The proposal included mock-up covers for a Star Wars Force Unleashed and Fracture, upcoming Lucas Arts video games. I know the proposal was passed on to another (marketing) executive. But I never heard any more about it. So, although two copies of my Clone Wars Flipz book is floating around he Lucas Arts offices, somewhere, I must assume it's a D.O.A.project. In any case, I'm posting it here (and on youtube.com, check out the high quality version for best viewing)) as a "Fan Movie" It's a "Concept Demo" and not for sale. If you like it, spread the word to other Star Wars fans and maybe email Lucas Arts. Your comments are always welcomed.

I'm still searching for the "right eyeballs" to see the potential my Dragonfly Flip book format has. It is ideal for movie and TV tie books. It's like photo-graphic novel with motion. Viewer comments on youtube or other sites tells me there is an interest in my Dragonfly Flipz books, so I'll just keep trying. I'm going to try contacting Dark Horse Comics, again, as they are a big Star Wars licensee. Sent them a email, also if you like my Flipz Book.

I'm looking forward to the movie opening this week. From the look of the latest trailers it looks great. So, far the animated versions have been top notch (maybe, they will for the episodes I, II, and III).

Paul Chadwick's Concrete - Comix Flipz Book

Here's my Dragonfly Comix Flip Book adaptation of a Paul Chadwick's "Concrete" story, "Watching a Sunset". Paul is one of my favorite comic book creators, really deserving of wider recognition. Concrete is Paul's best known work in a long and very creative career. There was talk of a Concrete live action movie at one time, I hope the success of recent comic book-based features jump-starts that project again.

The Dragonfly Concrete Comix Flipz book is adapted from animation I did many moons ago. The original comic story can be seen at the end of the flip book. The original animation is stored on tape somewhere. I'll have to find it and post it sometime. The Concrete Comix Flipz book project, as a licensed product from Dark Horse Comics, got sided track somehow, but I hope to get it on track this year (with the fans help). Leave comments here, and at Paul's blog site (link at right) and the Dark Horse sites, if you want to see this finished.

This project has a long storied history that I'll relate in a future post. For now just enjoy it.

Batman Sketch

Here's a sketch book drawing to welcome this summer's Batman movie and animated DVD. I'm actually looking forward more to the anime styled Gotham Knight DVD than the movie.

I wonder if other Warner Bros. properties will get this "Animatrix" style treatment. I'm not sure if that's a good, or bad, thing. The U.S. shows may come off looking childish and flat in comparison.

Happy Father Day

Here's wishing everyone a Happy Father's Day (U.S. holiday). I enjoyed a wonderful day with my family. We attended a free concert at the Rochester International Jazz Festival (being held this week) and had a nice dinner out.

Best of all, they give me this cool t-shirt from Threadless.com.

It's getting to be a tradition to get a t-shirt on Father's Day. It's much better than a tie. Last year's was a Snoopy "Joe Cool" shirt that read "Unathletic Dad". I loved and wore it to all their Little League games, just for fun.

Kung Fu Panda

I saw Kung Fu Panda this last weekend with my whole family, my wife and two boy (10 and 11 years old), and we all loved it. My most pleasant surprise is the was seeing the story co-credit of my friend Cyrus Voris on the big screen. I totally forgot he was doing a "Dreamworks project" a couple of years ago.

Cyrus and I met in the '80 working on his first animation job as story artist and later scriptwriter for the Galaxy Rangers series. He is one of the many great, and talented, friends I made on that project. He's come along way since then. Recently he and his writing partner Ethan Rieff, created and wrote Sleeper Cell, the acclaimed cable series.

Great work, Cyrus.

(On minor note (at least career-wise), Cyrus wrote the dialog for my comic book story "Warrior in the Mist".)

Another added enjoyment in Kung Fu Panda movie was the great the 2D animation in the opening dream sequince and the ending credits. They've both been post on the web. If, Dreamworks does a TV series or direct to DVD, Blu-Ray, follow up, they should use the 2D style with 3D Po wrap-arounds. That would be cool.

Go see Kung Fu Panda. You'll really enjoy.

I here the Metropolis Cinema Flipz Mini-Book I posted about a while back. It's a extended version of a earlier Metropolis Flipz book. Unfortunately, it seems the German rights owner (not Kino Video) is uninterested in my modest licensing proposal (after a couple of unanswered emails, and letter, I can take a hint). The Terror of the Blank Page

As I mentioned in my New Year's post, I want to get back to drawing and working on long dormant projects. To say the least this year has been year of changes for me as my family and I moved from sunny Los Angeles (Glendale, CA, actually) to cold, snowy Rochester, New York (we love the change of seasons, so it feels great to be here). But any move is very destructive to creative flow. It takes a while to get settled. I'm still not there yet, but working on it.

But to help thing along I picked it Scott McCloud's "Making Comic" book. It's a fun read and especially for me as a way to get back to basics of drawing for fun, again. Comic art was my first creative love and I miss not doing it. So, I brought a new drawing table and was shocked to realize it's the first I've had in over ten years. I done a lot of storyboard work on company art desks, or just leaning a drawing board on a desk at home (a computer desk, of course).

But what really, as I finished setting the new table the last image of the McCloud book struck me, as being all most cosmic.

In comparison, here my art desk.

Now, all that left is to start. That blank page can be terrorizing. I know a lot of artists go through this (creative dry patchs). For me, it's like having a fear of holding a pencil, again. I know I can draw, I have old drawing to prove it. In, fairness, my creative energies were channeled to my flip books stuff. But, now, I feel it's time to get back to drawing and take it to the next level. I definitely want to explore the digital medium. But, first things, first. The blank paper and a pencil.

Happy New Year & New Resolutions

First, I hope everyone had a great holiday season, and here's wishing you a very Happy New Year. It's time for New Year resolutions, again.

I, for one, like to make New York resolutions, if done in a positive way. I see it as just setting new, or revised, goals for yourself after some self reflection. Just, don't beat yourself up if you fall short of your goals. There's always next year. One of the easiest way to gauge yourself is to look at last year's New Year's resolution.

My two resolutions were to revise my blog, and pick up the guitar again. I'm happy to say, I did both pretty well. I've been posting more to this Dragonfly Views blog than my other web sites and really enjoying it. I thank all the people viewing this blog from all over the world. As for the guitar playing, I'm still at it. I play, at least, 10 minutes a day and more when time allows. I've started working on a music project, Warped Sky - Stray Cloud, a combination of songs from old tapes and new renditions of original tunes. Mostly it's for my friends, Richard and Rodney, the old Warped Sky band. But I think I'll post it online at some point.

So, what are this New Year's resolutions? Lets see:

To get back to drawing, for fun, and profit. Generally, put down some of my original ideas in more concrete forms like storyboards, animatics, model sheets, etc. Also, make better use of my website and blog to get the Dragonfly Flipz off the ground. To that end, I'll be offering a download version of some of my Dragonfy Flipz books soon.

I thinks that enough for this year.

Radio Shack Flip Book Spot

When we saw this new Radio Shack commercial, wife said she thought they got the idea from my Dragonfly Flipz movies. I, of course had nothing to do with the spot. I think it's possible. I've been posting flip book movies for the past year on several sites, so, some agency director may have come across them. But, really I'll never know and that's fine. I like the spot. It's sort of fun that with the camera in phone he didn't just point it at his own face and record the thanks. But, hey, the old school flip book animation made for a better commercial.

What do you think, did I inspire them?

New Yorker Cartoon - RingTales -Dragonfly Web Flipz Book

Here's Dragonfly Web Flipz book inspired by the very funny RingTakes animated versiosn of New Yorker Cartoons I post on youtube. I came across the animated shorts last year and immediately thought they would be great as flip books. It would be like taking the original spot cartoons back to their roots, the printed page, but with a twist. Some of the New Yorker cartoons are very funny in a classic sick, twisted sense of humor.

The youtube movie hasn't gotten many views but, as luck would have, one of the CEOs of RingTales emailed that he like it, so I sent him a copy. I'll keep everyone post on any further developments.

Superman Toon Flipz Book Preview Movie

Back in July, I did a Superman Toon Flipz Limited Edition Book. (You can read the old post for details) I donated a copy for auction at the San Diego Comic Con for the Comic Book Legal Defense group, and a copy was auctioned on Ebay. Well, I decide to expand the book and publish it for sell. I'm planning for a spring release date or maybe for the San Diego Comic Con, at the most. I'll be sure to post more info soon.

This planned revised version will get a new cover (better title type), the group pages in the beginning of the book, four pages on a page, will be enlarged and places on
their own page.

Here's a movie of the Limited Edition version. Please forgive the total butchering of the great sound track and the bad flipping.

I think this has got be the ultimate Superman flip book you'll find anywhere.

Dragonlance Animated Movie DVD coming Jan.'08

I just came across the listing on Amazon.com for the direct to DVD project I work on last year, Dragonlance: Dragons Of The Autumn Twilight. It's based on the extremely popular Dragonlance series of books and role-playing games by produced by Wizards of the Coast. I was starting to wonder when this was coming out. I storyboarded several sections for director Will Meugniot (his last name is pronounced "Mineo", but you wouldn't know it by the spelling). Will is a great guy and a well rounded, talented, artist/producer/director and a friend. He never stops drawing,..really!! He must thousands of charcter sketches floating around. (He really puts yours truly to shame in that regard) You can check out his ton of credits at his web site storyboardpro.com.

I own a lot to Will, he offered me my first LA animation job on the animated series ExoSquad (come on Universal, release a DVD set of this series, already!), while I was still living in New York City. My first position was as the show's oversea animation supervisor in Seoul, South Korea, than I was tapped to be co-producer for the second season. That position allowed me to move from New York City and the rest,as they say, is history, well...maybe boring personal history.

In any case, look for the DVD and check out Will's site when you get a chance.

Metropolis Cinema Flipz Book

Here's a Dragonfly Cinema Flipz book of Fritz Lang's Metropolis, the classic 1927 silent movie. It one of my favorite movies, for the great iconic images in it. You can definitely see the inspiration for Star War's C3PO in the "Maria" Robot.

I did this a several years back using images from a funky, low quality, budget VHS tape. Since then, a really great digital re-mastered, restored authorized edition was released by Kino Video on DVD in 2002. I did a second mini-book Cinema Flipz of scenes from the DVD. (See the book below) I'll have to make a movie of it soon and share it with everyone.

I hope to interest Kino Video in letting me do Dragonfly Cinema Flipz book of their great video releases, especially their silent movie catalog. I think it would be a nice way to introduce these films to a new young movie lovers. I'll keep you posted.

New Nerf Blaster from Hasbro

The good guys at Nerf Haven have unveiled a new Nerf Blaster from Harbro. Here's a peek. It seems it will be released next spring.

There's some debate about the size, below is my estimate in comparison to the LongShot.

Ruby, Ruby, Rubi

This past week I ordered, and recieved, the latest installment of one of my favorite Sci-Fi characters, Ruby, the Galactic Gumshoe. You may not have heard of Ruby, she's the main character in a series of audio adventures, basically "radio plays" produced by ZBS Foundation since the early 80's. Here's how I described her in a pitch outline I prepared awhile ago (more on that later):

Ruby, Galactic Gumshoe, follows the adventures of a “smart, saucy, and sassy” futuristic detective on the planet Summa Null in the 25th century. In this ultra modern setting of media overkill and out of control commercialization, Ruby, Galactic Gumshoe, accompanied by the eccentric archaeologist, T.J. Teru, and the lovable thief Rodant Kapoor (pronounced Roe-dent), weaves her way through a bizarre mix of hi-tech, mystical and humorous adventures.

Ruby’s world is laced with fantastic locations such as Magnifico, the City of Malls, Kismet, the inflatable nomadic city, and populated with a kaleidoscope of offbeat characters. These include Angel Lips, a sexy android. Moliere, chief of the “pun” loving Mole People, who love to dance the tango. Monet, an Aurorean, a race that “lives for aesthetics”. And/Or, the “techie” from the Digital Circus, an renegade underground performance group. And many, many, more.

In her trusty “talking” air car, Mustapha, Ruby navigates across a vibrant world of Scuzzies (cyber-punks), Slimeys (genetically engineered assassins) and a host of other alien oddball characters. Case after case finds Ruby matching wits with Techo Witches, Zoot Mutants and “dark forces” from this and “other” dimensions fighting for the hearts, minds, souls, and pocket books of the masses.

Ruby is “one tough cookie”. Self-confident and independent, she’s a neo-classic gum shoe, like a Sam Spade meets Han Solo in a female form. Highly intelligent and resourceful, Ruby is still basically a woman of action. Armed with her sharp mind and rapier wit, Ruby is more than a match for any human or alien foe who crosses her path. But Ruby also possesses a special gift; she can slow down time. This comes in handy when you need to dodge a laser blast or the swing of a bad guy’s energy-blade, allowing her to sidestep danger and returns the favor with a blast from her “Smith-Asahi Godzilla Blaster” with a signature response, “here’s a kiss for ya”.

All this is great stuff! ZBS Foundation has produce tons of Ruby stories, the last being Ruby 7, and other original productions. I started buying Ruby adventure on audio cassettes and immediately fell in love with them. So much so, that I tried to get the rights to produce an animated series, and I actually did secure the animation rights for about two years. But, as luck would have it I couldn't get the project sold. The first Ruby audio series was done as two minute episodes which actually aired on public radio, during rush hour drive time. I thought they were perfect for webisodes. I pitched them as such, at the height of the Web 1.0 crash. Bad timing on my part. I remember my last pitch meeting was the day after "9/11". Needless to say a lot of projects faded away at that time. My Ruby was one of them. So, the animation rights are now in the hand of other producer. But I still hold out that I'll get another chance. (Just for record, I haven't seen one bit of info from the other guy in the two years he's had the rights. I'm hoping no news is good news, because I think ZBS's Ruby deserves to be out there, even if I'm not the one doing it.) ZBS is one of my inspiring, creative heroes, so, please visit ZBS Foundation website for more info, and support them by buying their stuff.
Here's the animatic I did for my Ruby animated series pitch. It's an adaptation of the first audio episode. This is the first time it is being shown online, although the storyboard has been on my website for several years. I just never got around to posting the animatic. With picking up the latest adventure, I decided, why not! By the way, I also did a series of Dragonfly Flipz books of this short. If, I ever get the chance, I'll print that up someday. (By the way, ZBS and the media right owner has a copy of this animatic and flip books, just for the record)

Ruby, the Assassin

Some time after finishing on the Ruby pitch I came across this other Ruby, " Ruby, the Assassin" featured in demos for ATI graphic card. I be curious to know if these guys knew of the ZBS "Ruby". The episodes are very well and worth checking out.

I thought of approaching ATI and seeing if they'd be interested in having Dragonfly Flipz book adaptations done of the episodes. I still might do that.

Rubi - Wet

Just to add to the mix, here's a third "Ruby" or Rubi. This Rubi is the lead character in a new video game coming out next year called "Wet". It looks interesting in "Kill Bill, kind of way. I don't know much about it, but the trailer looked cool. (Warning: Mature content)

Dragonfly Game Flipz Books on Ebay

After moving from LA to Upstate New York, I unpacked and set up my work space. As I sorted through my Dragonfly Flipz book demos, I realized "man, I got a lot of these flip books", and for various reasons they're just sitting here collecting dust. Let's face it, I've been posting my Dragonfly Game Flipz movies on Gametrailers and Youtube, for over a year, now, contacting the game companies by sending emails and sample books, and the results have been luke-warm to no comment what so ever. Either it's a dumb idea (like the flip book is too low-tech for them) or they just don't get it. But, the views counts tell the fans "get it". So maybe it's time to move on, or at least try a different plan. I'll be cutting back on the Game Flipz book for awhile to concentrate other Dragonfly Flipz books that I can produce directly.

But, to thank all the viewers who have been soon inspiring, I've made a few of the Game Flipz boks available on EBay this week. A single copy, and only a single copy, of the Halo 3, Final Fantasy XIII, Killzone 2 (2005), and the Unreal Tournament 2007 Game Flip books will be on auction.

When I did my demo books I usually printed a gang up of 4 books. When I finished a group, I'd video a copy for my Game Flipz movie (so technically the book in the movie is still not for sale, if any one cares). A second copy was sent to the game developer with a proposal letter. So, I alway have 2 or three copies on file. I have given copies people as gifts or to perspective business contacts at conventions. For example, Geoff Keighley, who hosts the Game Head show for SpikeTV and shows here on Gametrailers.com has a copy of the Killzone 3 (2007) Game Flipz Book, one of my latest, the I gave to him at the San Diego Comic Con last July. Kevin Pereira of G4TV has a copy of a small Halo flipbook (Dude!...look in your sock draw, the damn thing is a collector's item!) Not one word from any of them, I know all these guys are busy, but...what's a guy have to do to get a response. So, it time to re-group.

Thundercat CGI Movie Project finds a Director.

My good friend, Larry Houston, sent me this article from Variety, the entertainment daily. It seems video game veteran Jerry O'Flaherty, art director of Gear of Wars and Unreal tournament will direct the CGI movie of the Thundercats , the classic Rankin and Bass cartoon from the '80's. Since I like the art direction of Gears and Unreal, I'll be looking forward to seeing what he does with the T'Cats. Actually, the reason Larry sent me the article(as I've mentioned before) is that I worked on the original series, (yes, I'm that old). I was the art director for the last season and designed the secondary characters for the last thirty shows and wrote two of them "Shadowmaster" and "Well Of Doubt" (you can check them out on Season 2 - Volume 2 of the Thundercats DVD set).

I hope they bring back the Shadowmaster. It would be fun to see my character on the big screen.

So, what left to say but...THUNDERCATS...HO-O-O-O-O!!!!

Halo, Halo everywhere...and not a game to play.

The title is a lame twist on the famous "water, water, everywhere, but not a drop to drink" line (it might been from a Shakespeare play, but I'm not sure). Sadly for me I can't play Halo 3 since I don't own a XBox 360 and have no plans to buy one. Maybe when it's released for the PC (Microsoft "Games for Vista" line), I'll have a Intel Mac by that time and get a chance to play it that way, a year or two down the line.

In any case, Halo 3 was released this week and you had to have been living under rock or in a deep coma (or both) not to have been exposed to the hype and fan madness. Don't get me wrong I like Halo, very much! As a card carrying comic book, sci-fi, video gaming nerd-geek, I think it deserves all the attention it gets. Congratulations to all the creative artist, animators, game programmers and everyone connected to it, for a job well done.

So, in honor of Halo 3's release, here's a retrospective of Dragonfly Flipz concept pieces done based on the game taken from earlier posts here, or on other sites. I know my Game Flipz™ books would have been a great addition to their licensed product line, but it wasn't meant to be, I guess.

(P.S. I also wanted to test the Blogger movie upload feature to see if it's image quality was better than youtube, which sucks!)

Here's the fake ad I did just before the official Halo laser tag toys were announced. I still think Hasbro's LazerTag product would have been a better choice. Hasbro has much better design and higher quality than Jazman, who will be making the official Halo laser tag stuff.

Here's the official Halo Laser Tag blasters coming out next month. (If the high prices I see posted for these are true, they'll be a real rip-off! I'll blog about that later, when they're released)

I actually picked up two Halo Mini-Pin sets of the weapons and some Wizkids Action Clix figures. I think they're cool, and reasonably priced. Here's a photo of the pins with my Halo Game Flipz books.

Maryann Kovalski - Children's Book Illustrator

The great thing about internet is it helps people contact with each other. It's great for keeping in touch with current friends, and associates. It helps you make new contacts, around the world. And best of all, it helps you re-contact with old friends. That was the case with Maryann Kovalski and myself.

Maryann is a talented illustrator, and sometimes writer, of children books with many published works to her credit. She also happens to have been a friend, and classmate, of mine at the School of Visual Arts, who I lost contact with for over twenty-odd years. As it happened, two years ago, I noticed a item about her in the SVA Alummi journal with a her email address. I emailed her, half thinking, "would she even remember me from those days?" To my pleasant surprise, she did, and we both have enjoyed the warm renewal of our friendship. It's a joy to exchange tales of families, careers, and just "bits of life's journey" from the different paths we've travel since art school. Now, that I live in Rochester, NY, and she lives in Toronto, Canada, we may get to see each other before another twenty or so years pass.

So, do yourself a favor and visit her website and marvel at the great books she has done. Tell her I sent you, and then seek out and buy her books. They great for sharing and reading to your kids. "Omar on Ice" is one of my favorite.

Arts and Crafts for Gamers -Warhawk Paper Model -

I was thinking of doing a blog, joking called, "Arts and Craft for Gamers' because of the Dragonfly Game Flipz Books I do and the "Pop-up card" did for "Gears of War" and "Halo Wars". The most common reaction to the Pop-up Cards were "What the F**K?!!!" But at least Game Flipz Books are generally well recieved. So, what a cool surprise to come across this paper Model for the fighter from PS3 Warhawk game. I hope this is a new start of a new trend, and maybe I had something to do with it. (If, that true I hope someone from Sony will let me know).

The model will be a great rainy day project. My boys love building paper models. I'll post a picture after they, or I put one together.

Remembering Joe Zawinul, Jazz keyboard master

It was truly a shock to hear today about the passing of the great jazz musician, Joe Zawinul, best known as co-founder of Weather Report. With co-founder sax player,Wayne Short, Joe Zawinul's Weather Report, blazed trail across the music landscape that many followed but few could equal. In '70 they were vanguard of Jazz Fusion, that hybrid and, when played by lesser musicians, bastard child of "Rock" and "Jazz". But Weather Reports music still holds up, their tune "Birdland" has become a true classic, due in large part to the stunning bass work of the late Jaco Pastorius.

What I remenber most about Weather Report was that at the time I started listening to them in the '70's, I was solidly into guitar base groups, Jimi Hendrix Experience, John Mclaughlin, Jeff Beck, Cream, etc. But, Weather Report was always on my turntable (I stll have those vinyl records, folks!), and they didn't have a lead guitarist in the group! Their music was so good it just grabbed you and shock you until you fell to the floor, a happy heap, dazed and amazed.

Of course, Weather Report wasn't Joe's first band. He played with along list of jazz greats, likes Cannonball Andderly, who Joe wrote the classic Jazz tune "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy" for (one of the most soulful tunes ever) and Miles Davis. It was in Miles Davis' "Bitch Brew" session that the seeds of Weather Report were sown. Check the band members list and see how many jazz fusion bands grow from it's personal.

With the passing of Joe Zawinul, and the recent passing of jazz great drummer Max Roach, the music world and our life are a little poorer. But the pure, bright, joy of their music will enrich the lives of all those who take to the time to embrace it with a open heart, mind, and ears.

The Joe's family I offer my most humble condolences. He will always live in our hearts.

Greeting from Rochester NY.

I'm still not totally settled. We're moving into our Town House, next week, so I'm sending this email from my father-in-laws's computer. (My computer is still on route from LA with all my email addresses on it). Everything is going fine, I'm happy to be away from LA. I'm looking forward to diving into my own projects, Dragonfly Flipz and others, full time, and getting back to drawing. In the meantime, my family and I are adjusting to our change of lifestyles. The kids have started school, which they like a lot, plus they have made a couple of new friends, already.

Once, I'm settled in, I'll post updates and pictures. Friends and family can send me emails to my (dfly) address you already have, that's not changing. I can read them through Web Mail.

Free Halo 3 Game Flipz Download

In response to the people who just don't get the whole "flip book" thing, but really, to thank all those people who do "get it", and like my Dragonfly Flipz movies, I've posted a small Game Flipz Demo for download on my website.

Just click on the Halo 3 Game Flipz Book with the Flamethrower cover. Then, download the .pdf file, print it out, cut the pages out, assemble in order, staple and flip. There you have it , your first Dragonfly Game Flipz to enjoy.

This is a simple one sided flip book. Normally, I like to make two sided ones only, but that's a little more complex, so let's start with this one. It was designed for those pre-cut business card sheets. I advise printing it on card stock or brochure paper (I used Glossy HP Brochure Paper). But, doing so means cutting out the pages by hand. Reverse the last page, Pg. 40, to became the back cover. Use two staples from a heavy duty stapler(a plain office stapler may not be strong enough) to keep the pages from twisting.

And here's some advance tips: Laminate the front and back cover pages (image side only) with those stick-on lamination sheets for protecting I.D. cards and such. That keeps the covers from being ruined by the oils in the fingers. Plus it gives the book a more polished look.

Those who "get it", please show it the guys who don't, who leave post messages like, "...pointless" and "..why not just watch the video?" I'll try to make a movie of the version of the flip book, but I'm in the process of moving , so time is short. You can leave a comment here or when I post the movie.

Killzone 2 (E3 -2007) Game Flipz Movie Posted

Finally, I got to post my Dragonfly Game Flipz™ book, featuring one of the latest trailer for Killzone 2 (E3 - 2007)for the PS3. This is follow up to my first Killzone 2 Flipz book for E3 2005 trailer. posted 9 months ago. For now, remember this is a Concept Demo and not for sale!

There was so much great action in this new Killzone trailer, I needed to try a slightly different format this time around, 5 panels for flipping pages instead of 4. Actually after I as started to layout the book from the first new trailer released, Gametrailers.com post two additional Killzone trailers with more action. So, I took action from the three different trailers to tell an edited version of the whole mission. My 5 panel format was intended for a larger flipz book size 5" x 7", that way the action panels remain the same size as the 3 1/2" x 5" mini-books. But at the last minute I decide to print them at the mini-book size, so I could have 4 instead of 2 for the same price. Also, I was curious to see how how the 5 panel format work in a mini-book. I'm not sure Killzone was the right choice for the 5 panel min-book format because the images are so dark and complex. I simpler image (flash animation for example) might had worked better. Add that to the poor quality of the youtube movie, I must admit I'm a very disappointed in the youtube video quality. It looks like a muddy mess. My original upload file was much clearer. Somehow the the youtube compression of the video really kills all the detail in the movie. I have to figure out how upload better looking videos, because it bugs me to no end to see my books looking so crappy, and muddy, that you can't see the image details. Sorry, everyone I'll try to do better in the future.

Of course, I'm hoping to get some wider exposure for my Dragonfly Flipz books. Dragonfly Flipz™ is a innovative flip book format I developed to be allow me to adapt cartoons, trailers (or any video, animation, source for that matter) into an animated story flip book. These books, 3 1/2" x 5" and 96 to 200 pages in length, would be excellent promotional items or premiums and could be a build into a new revenue stream for media company, large or small. The small size ( 96 pages) allows them to fit in standard game and DVD cases.

Killzone 2 (E3 -2007) Game Flipz Movie Post- Delayed, Sorry

Well, here's a "good news, bad news", situation. The bad news, I was unable to post my latest Killzone 2 (E3- 2007) flip book movie, due to a nagging computer problem, I'm still in the process of figuring out, so please be patient. I'll get it up as soon as possible.

The good news, as I was roaming the floor of the San Diego Comic-Con, on Friday, showing my Dragonfly Flipz Book samples to anyone who showed a interest (and some who didn't), I introduced myself to Geoff Keighley, who does the Game Head show for SpikeTV and airs on Gametrailers.com. I showed Geoff my Game Flipz books and he liked them. I explained to him I'm a GT member and have other movies posted there, and how well received they are the members. I give him my new Killzone 2 Game Flipz book and business card show to his producers. We'll see what happens. Thanks Geoff for your interest.

I'll be doing full blog post on my one day at the Comic Con, soon. There's a lot to tell.

Superman Toon Flipz - Comic-Con Preview and Ebay Auction

I figure it time to pull out all the stops as far as getting my Dragonfly Flipz book project going, so I've come up with a promo item for the San Diego Comic-Con International happening next week. I wasn't expecting to still be in LA (I'm moving back East). But, as it turns out I will be able to make it down for at least one day, Friday (and maybe sunday, if needed). There are a lot company booths I want to hit, especially those that I've made sample Dragonfly Flipz Books of their projects, Square-Enix of Final Fantasy fame and Blizzard Entertainment for "StarCraft 2".

But to really cover my bases for the Comic-Con I've done a "Superman Toon Flipz - Special Limited Edition", Dragonfly Flipz book, an adaptation of the classic Max Fleischer Superman cartoon, "The Mechanical Monsters" from the 1940's. I mean who hasn't hear or seen "Superamn"?!!! This is limited to only 4 printed and hand assembled books They're 3 1/2 x 5" mini-books, 200 full color (high quality laser) pages, with a laminated cover. All the images in the flip book is from a Public Domain video downloaded from the Prelinger Archives and Internet archives . They have a large collection of PD stuff, they want people to use for free. I plan to sent them one of the books. One book, I plan to donate to the Comic Book Defense fund for their Comic-Con fund raising auction, if they'll accept it (I emailed them offering it, but have not heard back, yet). In anycase, I will put one up for auction on my Ebay store. I'll try to have small flyers to hand out as I walk the Comic-Con, and I'll ask friends with table to spread the word. I'll. of course be show the Superman and my other Flipz book to as many interest parties as I can, so keep an eye out for me.

My Superman Toon Flipz™ is a collector's item, truly one of a kind. But, when I was working on it I realized I would really be better as two books, so I wouldn't have to skip so much animated action, that I cover in comic book layout pages instead of flippiing pages to make it fit into a 200 page book (my max.size) So, I may make a small print run of a B&W version, just to make use of all the work I put into it, and do two book color version later.

Killzone 2 (E3 -2007) Game Flipz Preview - Part 3

Here another preview of the Killzone 2 (E3 - 2007). It' almost finish, I'm getting it printed tomorrow and should have a movie posted by wednesday. I had computer problem, I desktop program refused to batch convert my pages to PDF, so I had to do all 202 page one by one, that was a drag what normally takes 1O minutes, took three or so hours. But, it was still worth the effort. Here's a few more preview images.

Actually the comic pages in the Preview Part 2 are no longer in the book, I had to revise the action, so that dialogue scene is now in the flipping action.

Here's an added extra I couldn't resist adding to the flip book. You might remember a post I did a while back calling for more Nerf or laser tag tie-in with FPS games, well, as I posted Halo is getting a Laser tag set this fall. In any case here my fake ad for Killzone Nerf dart blaster. The Nerf longshot is a real product, already. It just needs a cooler color scheme.

Soon, one of these toy companies, or softair BB, or even paintball marker makers will realize there's an market waiting to be tapped big time, for the tie-in items for older kids 12+. Here another sneak peek at the latest Game Flipz book, for Killzone 2, I'm working on. It's going to be a monster flip book. As I started three massive trailers were released, so I'm trying to include great action footage from each, and tell the narrative storyline of the clips. I, still hope to have it done by this friday so I can start work on preparations for the upcoming Comic Con.

Killzone 2 (E3 -2007) Game Flipz Preview

E3, the gaming industrial mega "show and tell" event is being held in LA, this week. Unfortunately, for people like me, anyway, it's an invitation only affair, this year, to get out the "low lifes". (You think they meant...me, too?) But, the game sites, like Gamestrailers.com and 1up.com, are flooding the web with great media coverage. Still, I miss the hot booth babes, game sound effects and music blasted to volumes to make your ears bleed, enough strobing lights to cause epileptic fits in the dead, and the smell of sweaty geeks drooling over the games and booth babes, well...may not the "drolling geeks" part.

E3 also means tons of great game trailers that I want to turn into Dragonfly Game Flipz™ Books. First on the "MUST DO" list is the new trailer for Killzone 2 game. I did one Game Flipz book of the first trailer from last year's E3. So, I have to stay current and it looks great.

While doing a google search for flip book (of course), I came across this great French web site with lot of interesting info on flip books. The really great thing is it's has an English version, also. Be sure to check out all the sections, especially the history and links sections. I'm adding them to my links and I've contacted them to see if my Dragonfly Flipz books can be included in their links.

Transformer - the Game - Opening Cinema

Here's the CGI opening for the Transformers game based on the new movie. I have to say this game looks interesting. I don't know who did the CGI work, but it's first rate (I see another Dragonfly Game Flipz book demo in your future). StarCraft 2 Game Flipz Movie Posted

Finally, I got a chance to finish and post my new StarCraft 2 Game Flipz movie. I really like the way it came out.

The StarCraft 2 trailer about 4 1.2 minutes long (scroll down to view it from the earlier post). That's over 16,200 video frames (at 30 frs/sec), so getting it down to 641 frames and 172 pages was a real challenge. I did two different covers, the first was a montage of screen shot from the trailer, the second was done using a desktop pic offered on Blizzard Enterainment's StarCraft 2 web site. I added some concept art and character info screens from the Official Blizzard StarCraft 2 site. (click on the image for larger view)

I tried to add some improvements to the video presentation, but I know there're not fully sucessful. My focus is a little soft, sorry (I think the auto focus gets confused by the page flipping. I'll try manual focus next time). I tried cut to tighter shots for the flipping action to give everyone a better look at that. Hope you liked it.

I'm going to send a couple of copies to Blizzard and see if I can produce them for all the StarCraft fans. As usual, your comment and suggestions are welcomed.

I did a second Dragonfly Flipz (Toon Flipz)this past week for another all time fan favorite preview trailer. But, I want to sent it to the creators company first to get their reaction, if possible, before posting it. Keep checking in, it's a knock out.

Super Soaker - BFG - Revised

"So, my kids drags me to Target to get themselves a video game and SuperSoaker.

Ooo-My-God!!! Here's the biggest water Blaster (gun?) I've ever seen! The AQUASHOCK HYDROBLITZ !!! It's BFG (Big F***ing Gun from the video game Doom) of SuperSoaker set. This brute is about 2 1/2 feet long and weights about 3 lbs, empty! It holds a gallon and a half of water!

I realize the water guns have advanced in the last ten years or so, but, you could put out a building fire with this thing.

But, five minutes after the leaving the store, I wanted one, just for the sheer silliness of it. It will make a great prop for the sci-fi short, "The Backyard Arms Race", (feel free to use the idea,guys),at least that what I'll tell my wife, when I buy it.

I'll keep you posted, and watch your back this summer, your kid might be behind you with this monster."

Well, since I posted the above, I did buy the Hydroblitz for my other son, who loves it. He took it to his little league team's end of the season pool party and all jaws dropped when he entered. A new level of water armament had been reached. They loved it! The kids had a "Blast" in more way than one.

Just for fun, I searched on youtube and find this video profile on the inventor of the Super Soaker, Lonnie Johnson, an Aerospace Engineer from Los Angeles, California. I think it's very inspiring, and plan to share it with my kids to show how a using your brain doesn't mean you can't do something fun. Note how long it took to get a company interested in making to his invention. There has to be a lot of former toy executives kicking themselves for passing on this idea.

Thank, Mr. Johnson, summer would not have been as much fun without your invention.

StarCraft 2 Game Flipz Preview

This cool game trailer for the Starcraft 2 computer game was released last week or so. The original Starcraft is huge gaming favorite, especially in Korea where they have massive following, including TV coverage of tournament with big cash prizes. I had only play a demo of the first game, but I always liked the premise of the game. It's one of the few mega-game hits that are also available for the Mac. So, this weekend I picked up a box set, Starcraft - Battle Chest, which includes the original game and two expansion pack, and two strategy guides. A nice buy for only $9. So, now Starcraft will be added to my list unplayed or unfinished games, oh well.
Also Blizzard, the game developer, had some great trailers for their other other great game World of Warcraft.

Whats really cool is the Starcraft 2 trailer reminded me of my Warrior in the Mist "suiting up" sequence. I mean, both have naked (or near naked) guy getting dressed up in battle armor by machines. Keep in mine, my Warrior in the Mist was done way back in 1992, long before Starcraft was released. Of course their video is lightyears ahead of mine in quality, thats why I like it. But, just for comparison here's Part One of Warrior in the Mist.

I was so inspired by the Starcraft 2 trailer, I've started a Dragonfly Game Flipz book of it. Here's the first comic pages before the flip book action starts. I will have it finished in a week or so and post a movie of it. as always.

Thundercats Movie At Warner Bros.

It seems Warner Bros picked up a option for a live action Thundercats movie. The idea of animated series has been knocked around (I was actually tapped to be a director on one of the attempts that fell by the wayside). This will make a lot of TCats fans happy, but time will tell if it ever makes it to the big screen. If it does, maybe the animated series will rise again.

Here's a live-action fan movie I just found on Youtube. It fun and well done.

I worked on the original Rankin/Bass series as Art director and secondary character designer, on the last thirty shows. I got to write two of the episodes, "Shadowmaster" and "Well of Doubt", (no...I don't get any money from the DVD's releases. So, don't ask!) I have some of the artwork on my website. Here's a couple of them below.

Thundercat still remains my favorite work experience. I'm happy to say I'm still in touch with the good friends I made at Rankin /Bass.

This interesting Youtube movie, "Women in Art", was send to me by a dear friend. She, and others, had some reservations about the lack of pictures featuring "women of color". Here's part of my reply: "I like it lot...I wouldn't get too blown out of shape about the lack of "woman of color" in the piece. I just enjoyed it at "face value" (...horrible pun, intended). If, it had be titled "Women in Western (or European) Art", it may not have received so much flack. In any case, it leaves the option open for other films to feature various other cultures and art. In instead of knocking the artist, who by viewing his other film, like "One World", seems to have his heart and mind in the right place, those who find the piece lacking should just... do their own film."

We worked together at Warner Bros. awhile back. While there, we booth have comic art published in a Komikwerks anthology (published by Shannon Denton, who worked with us, also). I'm looking forward to seeing Simon's personal projects, especially his comic property, Lightspeed Delivery. It's a lot of fun.

Afro Samurai DVD - Director's Cut - Box Art Gallery

I purchased the Afro Samurai - Director's Cut DVD set, this weekend. Only after I got it home did I realize it not being released until next week, tuesday, May 22. I've actually, just by plain dumb luck, have a mini-media scoop! (Well...you can see the DVD set on the Afro Samurai web site.)

In any case, I haven't viewed the animation, yet (I'm looking forward to doing so, since I missed some of the later episodes), but the the packaging is just excellent.
The box is a heavy cardboard with a magnetic lock, printed on textured coated paper stock like a high quality hard back book. The interior of the fold out panels features original artwork by the Takashi Okazaki, Afro Samurai's creator.

Funimation Entertainment did a great job with this package. I have a Samurai 7 anime series DVD box set they did which include mini storyboard books. So, they really know how to present their releases.

For different reasons, my top three favorites are "Killzone 2", "Unreal 07", and "300 the Movie". The Killzone 2 Flipz book was the first I used my comic page / flip book page format which really opened up all kinds of possibities and uses for my flip books. The Unreal 07 flipz book is just such a cool, dynamic, trailer, the flip book just had to be made. The '300 the Movie" flip was again done because the trailer movie is so cool and I loved the Frank Miller comic (BTW - I keep forgetting to upload my Sin City Cinema Flipz book. I'll have to do that this week). My next favorites are Final Fantasy XIII and Marvel Utimate Alliance. The FFXIII flipz book was the first I introduced the art gallery pages in, which will now be a standard feature of my books. Meet the Robinson and Afro Samurai are my most ambitious as far as page count, 144 and 200 pages respectively.

Many GT viewers have asked about buying my books. Out of respect for creators of all these properties (I'll work in the creative arts (animation)and wouldn't want someone bootlegging my stuff. Plus, I wouldn't want to be sued by some like Sony), I'm not selling these on Ebay or privately ( I was offer $530.00 for Halo 3 Flipz book from a guy who saw it on Youtube, I declined). I'm still hoping to interest the game nad movie companies into letting me make and sell them. I've contacted several and I get some response but things seem to fall by the wayside.

So, I asking for your help. If you'd like to see your favorite game or movie trailers become flip books, write the game companies, Bungie, Square-Enix, Epic, Sony, Microsoft. and others. My Flipz book would be a great item for their online stores. Down the line, I'm open to talk about a royalty arrangement. I'd pay for for production, I just need the permission from the property owners for use of the trailer videos.

Thanks, again, for your support. No matter what, I'll keep making more Dragonfly Flipz books movies, if you keep watching them I promise.

Magus Robot Fighter - Valiant Comic Promo

Here's another ancient item from my unseen art archives. It's something for all the Valiant Comic fans. This is Promo I did for a presentation to Valiant Comics, back in 1992(?).

Valiant Comic was a company started by Jim Shooter after leaving Marvel Comics. Valiant was a going great guns for awhile, then internal problems and a shift in the comic business cause it to crash and burn. It featured a good mix or updated chassic Gold Key Comic characters from the 1950's and '60's, like Magus the Robot Fighter, Doctor Solar, and Turok, Dinosaur Hunter and an interesting line-up of original properties, Eternal Warrior, X-O Man of War, Bloodshot, Harbingers and others. Turok actually have several video games made from it.

This short promo was done on an Amiga 2000 computer with the old Deluxe Paint animation program. The original art by Art Nichols (fist smashing through the robot head) was drawing from a Valiant party announcement. I added the beginning and inbetween action art and ending. It's crude by todays standards, but still fun.

Minuteman - Capt. America's replacement.

I know that Captain America's flag draped body is not even cold in the ground yet, but in case they need a replacement, here's my Cap clone "Minuteman". He's named for the American Revolutionary War citizen fighters, and the mascot of my high school, Thomas Jefferson HS in Elizabeth, NJ.

I never came up with a origin for Minuteman maybe I'll get around to it one day. He's one of long list of original characters I need to update and get out there, somehow. I'll have to post them here, every now and then.

Captain America R.I.P.

It seems Marvel Comic killed off Captain America recently. Isn't that a really "un-american" thing to a national hero and WWII vet like Cap? Let's hope this turn of events follows the "Death of Superman" lead and we see a new Captain American rising from the grave.

Kingdom Hearts - Mickey Mouse the Warrior

Heres a cool image from the CGI trailer Of the game Kingdom Hearts II - Final Mix. It features Disney and "Final Fantasy" Characters. Final Fantasy is one of the most popular RPG (Role Playing Game) in the world, created in Japan. Kingdom Heart is a interest cross-culture mix, that seem to be doing very well (I admit I haven't played). With the on-going debate in some animation circles about 2D versus 3D renderings of classic characters, I thought this might be worth a look.

Speaking of Final Fantasy here's a encore viewing of the Dragonfly Game Flipz™ book I did of the Final Fantasy XIII game trailer. The game is planned for release later this year or early next. So far this Game Flipz™ movie has received over 8,881 viewing on gametrailer.com and youtube.com with many positive comments from Final Fantasy players and fans. I'm still attempting to get follow up contact from Square-Enix, the game company behind Final Fantasy, to get permission to produce this book. But, until then, just enjoy the movie.

Dragonfly 300 Cinema Flipz Book

It seems "300", the movie inspired by the Frank Miller's graphic novel had a great box office opening the weekend. I tried to see it last friday, but all the showing were sold out.

I was very impressed with the first trailer when it came out several months back, so I did a Dragonfly Cinema Flipz Book of it. It's been posted on gametrailers.com and youtube.com and so far has recieved over 9,000 plus views.

Here's another artist link worth checking out. Lynnetta Miller posted a website up date on the Animation Nation board under her AN member name "Nettajean". I don't know Lynnetta personally, but I think she has some wonderful art on her site. I especially like the pencil drawing of the guitars. Meet the Robinson - Dragonfly Cinema Flipz Book

Disney's Meet the Robinson's animated feature opens later this month. It looks like a lot of fun, I really like the trailer. Back in December, I did this Dragonfly Flipz book from one the movie's trailers. The Flipz book came out really well. A sample of this Flipz book is floating around Disney's marketing department right now, or forgotten in someone's desk. I was told there was interest in doing something with it but there's been no contact since January (I can take a hint). So, I'll try to post a fan movie of it on youtube.com soon. It may be the only chance it has to be seen.

Hi-Tech, No-tech or Internet Junkie goes Cold Turkey

My internet connection was out for a couple of days. Boy, talk about feeling cut off from the world. No emails, Ebay, blogging, quicktime game and movie trailers, flash animation or other online "time stealers". But, I also needed it for work (to download storyboard reference art) and business (I got a email from a company in Canada interested buying 1000 flip book, just as the internet connection went south. Great timing!) But all seems to be back to normal for now, but it does point out how important the "net" has become for me and others. I, for one, still like to think I keep it in perspective, but according to my family I spend too much time on the computer. But, during the online downtime, I did other things like help at my boys little league practice and continue playing my guitar (every night for at least half an hour) and do regular family stuff. There is a life beyond the net. So, after you read this, go take a walk around the block, it will do you good.

Halo Laser Tag Toy Deal Announced!

Well, how's this for being ahead of the curve. In a recent post on this blog, I proposed game based laser tag toys for Halo, Killzone and other FPS (First Person Shooters games). I even added a mock toy ad. Seems I had the right idea, but different toy company. Here's the announcement:

I still think the Hasbro LazerTag line are better designed, but I can only hope Bungie has a lot of input into the final toy design, and demand top quality.

First, is Holly Sorensen, a textile artist (weaver). Holly produces wonderful pieces of art on a loom with originality and excellent craftsmanship (or is it Crafts"person"ship?).

New Lief Films Inc.

Next, are some friends I haven't seen in a while, but they are still very dear to us (Lisa and myself). Dev Ramsaran and Sonja Kodric Ramsaran are animation artists living in Canada. They recently sent us a email with the link to their studio website, a truly family affair, with their lovely daughter, Lief.

Here a quote from the site:
"Dev Ramsaran graduated from Sheridan College's classical animation program in 1978. He won first prize for animation at the 1978 Canadian Student Film Festival with Sonja for the film 'Madhouse Rag'. Since then he has worked in the field on a multitude of productions for television, videos and feature films.

He has worked as a storyboard artist, sheet director, animation director and overseas animation supervisor. He has been recognized by The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences several times for contributing to the multiple Emmy Award winning 'Arthur' TV series.

"Sonja Kodric Ramsaran graduated from Sheridan College's classical animation program in 1978. Her student film 'Madhouse Rag', produced with Dev, took first prize at the 1978 Canadian Student Film Festival...She has worked in the field as a traditional classical animator in Ottawa, Toronto, Montreal, Athens and Zagreb."

"Lief Renata Ramsaran is an inspiration to the creative process at New Lief Films Inc. Lisa and I met this talented couple in Seoul, Korea when Dev and I were oversea supervisers (for different companies) at Akom animation studio, back in 1993 (before Lief was born). Their friendship has been one of the best thing we gained from that experience. Check out their site for a fuller view of their talents. Dev is also a great classical guitar player (man, I'm a jealous!)

Halo LaserTag Set?

On the Gametrailer.com forum I started a thread calling for Nerf and LaserTag video game tie-ins. Some people just didn't get it, so here's a dummy mockup. As they say, "a picture is worth a thousand words".

Here's a product combo that should be a no-brainer for the Bungie, game developer of Halo, and Hasbro, the toy company. (Click on Image to Enlarge)

Todays Toy Arsenal or Nerf Nerds United

My kids recently got Nerf dart Blaster that I just have to get for myself. This thing is so cool (Check out the picture above). It looks like a prop from the "Aliens" movie. If you were a kid of fifties like me you had "toy guns" and played "War" and "cowboys and indians", long before it was un-PC to do so. Being a sci-fi fan, I like rayguns, blasters and laser pistols from Buck Rogers to Star Wars and beyond. Just a quick cruise about the toy sections Toys R' Us or Target and you'll be amazed at the amount of well designed "Blasters"in the toy market now, ("Blasters is our small attempt at parental Political Correctness in our home).

So here's are some of our (my boys, and mine, my wife will have nothing to do this stuff) current arsenal.

The Nerf Longshot CS6. This thing is massive, about 32 inches long. That a lot of plastic for $30.00. It comes apart to become two blasters. Being the nerd that I am I start to think of ways do to "improve" it. You know, modify it! Well, a quick look on the web reveals there is a whole army of nerds doing that already. NERF NERDS UNITE!! I can't wait to add my planned "mods" to the fray.

One of my favorites is the Nerf Maverick REV-6 (below), it reminded me of Hellboy pistol in the comics and movies. And it was cheap, under $10.00.

My other favorite is the Nerf Firefly. It flashes when it fire and makes the foam darts glow in the night and the design is like something from the Ghost in the Shell anime movies and series.

My boys also have the cool Hasbro LazerTag sets. Actually, I got the big rifle with missile launcher first and they pick up the pistols the next day (paid for out of their own allowance, I might add). It's really fun when their friends bring their LazerTag sets over and the safe firefight begin. Best of all there is no agruments about who's "out" or not because the units keeps score.

It's fun having kids and being able to sample their playthings. Okay...I was buying stuff like this for myself before they were born. If you work into animation or comics, you know most of the toy collectors are middle age guys with deep pockets. Another thing is when you see any "behind the scenes" feature about an animated film or video game company profile there are always some bunch of toys on the artists work area and most likely a Nerf firefight will break out.

So, follow nerds, united and have fun.

Afro Samurai Anime Flipz Movie

I just posted a movie of my Dragonfly Flipz™ Afro Samurai Anime Flipz book on Gametrailers.com (click on the link to view, the file was too big for Youtube). I really pushed the limits on his one: 200 pages from a video clip that was 4 1/2 minutes. That's about as far as I'll try to go for this small size book 3 1/2" x 5". It gets a little bulky for flipping. Check it out and leave a comment here or on the Gametrailers' comment section.

My First DragonFly Flipz

Here the Star Gladiator Game Flipz™ I did in 2002. It's based on a Capcom futuristic, weapon based fighter for Playstation 1. It was actually the first Game Flipz I tried, so it's short and only side sided. My original idea was that the diagram of the button comp for the move would be printed on the back of the flip book, and that's still a good idea. (Soul Caliber, Tekken, Street Fighter, anyone?) Anyway, I just uploaded it to Gametrailer.com and it got put the "Featured User Movie" section on the main page. As a result it got 478 viewing (and counting) for it's first 12 hours. I'm pleasantly shocked by the good response. I'm hoping one these game licensing directors will return my calls and email, so I can get these thing out there.

In the meantime, enjoy the teaser.

Dragonfly Afro Samurai Anime Flipz™ Book

I'm just too excited my this to keep it under wraps. I've did concept demo Dragonfly Anime Flipz™ book for the new SpikeTV animated series Afro Samurai. I think it's going to be a big hit for them. Hopefully it will mean more "mature" animation projects will follow, on SpikeTV and elsewhere. The Afro Samurai Anime Flipz™ book is my most ambitious book to date, 200 pages and it was make from a video clip that run 4 1/2 minutes.

Here's a promo flyer I made to go with the sample flipbook. Actually, some high level execs have shown great interest in Afro Samurai Anime Flipz, I'm hoping to hear from them soon. In the meantime, I'm thinking of post a user movie of it on youtube.com to get some fun feedback going.
